All in all, a pretty good day...
On Friday, after a good sleep and an even better breakfast, I decided that it was time for another skiing lesson. Got dressed, went to the Ski School desk and signed up. I found a hand delivered package from home waiting for me at the desk, and after a call to the number on the front met up with my next door neighbour's piano teacher! She is visiting Banff with her family, and offered to bring anything over which needs delivering. Although she wasn't taking lessons with Sunshine Village Ski and Snowboard School, she had a good time and learnt how to ski.
Anyway, at 10:00 I met up with my instructor, who to my delight was someone who I'd been trying to get a lesson with for some time. There was 5 other students in my group, which is unusually large for a Black Runner Performance Workshop. But the whole group got on fantastically (at least, when we weren't doing 'the train' at top speed on a busy run...) and we met up for a beer afterwards in Trapper's.
During the lesson, we were all given one aspect of our skiing to think about, and mine was about focusing my weight onto the balls of my feet. After the first turn, my skis had transformed into Automatic Turning Machines and everything changed! Although it was a little shaky because I'd not skied with my weight there for a while, it was a big improvement and everything after that got a heck of a lot easier...
We spent most of the morning doing exercises (including the train, where we ski in a very close line with a pole joining our hips) and practising the stuff we were told to work on. After the all-you-can-eat buffet (a perk of Ski School Desk Staff), we went out again and focused on getting as many miles under our skis as possible. By the end, our technique had all improved and many members of the group who would not normally be able to ski a whole day could do with ease. As a hardened ski-bum, tiredness is never a problem but I definitely noticed an increase in efficiency.
After the lesson, and a drink, I headed into town for some groceries and a meal. I went with a couple of others who work in Ski School, and after I refilled my larder with bread, fruit juice and cookies (juice and cookies has become a bit of a post-work ritual...) we went to the Rose and Crown where we were promised live music to accompany our meal (which, disturbingly, has the same crest as DOYRMS...) Unfortunately, the 6-piece Ska band struck up at 10:30, but I still enjoyed a 'blackened buffalo wrap' before heading back to Sunshine Village.
