Hurrah! A job!

This morning, I went scouting for a job. The second place I asked is a large hotel with restaurant, pictured above. I filled in a form, and chatted with the kitchen manager, who said that the only job I would probably be able to get would be washing up.

She said she was short of washers up at the moment, so I expressed an interest. Especially when she mentioned it as $12 an hour, and staff accommodation was provided nearby at $10 - $14 a day. Plus, the company owns a number of hotels in Banff where I would be able to get employment anytime if I needed it. Plus, I would get a 40% discount on all food in all their hotels and restaurants. Plus, they were offering free ski passes.

I said I'd be back a little later, but after 20 more minutes of more wandering, and no appetising job offers, I returned and said I'd like to take on the job. So I'll be working 6:30am till 2:30pm. Breakfast all-you-can-eat is included. Unfortunately, they only had one bed of staff accommodation available, and that starts on Wednesday- which is perfect, because HI Banff Alpine Centre wants you to stay for 3 nights before they can refund you the nights you didn't stay.

All I need now is for a friendly kitchen and I'll be set up until I can get to Sunshine!

This afternoon I went wandering into Banff, had some more cheap soup for lunch (I might now have a good job which will leave me $60+ a day spare change, but I'm still poor until I get my refund!). I popped into the Sunshine Village base, who were incredibly helpful and clued me up a little more about the hiring clinic. I no longer care if I live on- or off-mountain, now I've found out what their staff accommodation is like...

I went shopping in Safeway (yes! they do still exist!) for my breakfast and snacks over the next 3 days (Mum, more than half my bill was spent on fruit, even though I only bought a small pot!). I overheard a couple of lads discovering which was the cheapest type of butter, and whether to go for coking margerine for their toast because it is so much cheaper, even if it does taste awful. I joined them, chose some cheap I Can't Believe, and asked them where they were staying. Next thing, we were trying to find a bus to the Hostel, and having missed it we walked back up the hill. They were doing much the same thing as me, and are booked into the hiring clinic. They dropped of loads of resumes today, but haven't got a job just yet...

Bring on tomorrow and my 5:00 wake-up (I'm so glad for jet lag).

  • Wow Colin! seems that your year in Canada is finally coming together. Now with a job, cheap food, cheap accomodation and a free lift pass, this is all shaping up to seeming like a good find. Any chance that you get a discount for friends and family? Hope that the next few days in the job turn out as good as the ones so far. All is well here, apart from a few pieces of bad news, firstly, my laptop has decided to die on me, I suspect a blown up processor as it smells quite funky but other than that everything is fine. Racing on Sunday was awesome, although I came 2nd in all the races (Nigel's new kit is just too fast for me) I had a brilliant time and hopefully by next week I shall have all the parts to allow me to win again. All the best, Dave
