Colin Field: SameSun Lodger

First, thanks for those who have posted comments. I know know who I'm writing to!

Second, let me tell you about what I've been up to. If you don't care, leave NOW!.

Yesterday evening the 4 BUNACers who I would have been on the group flight with arrived in Banff after a 16 hour Greyhound ride. Although they attended the orientation and met each other about 6 days earlier than I met them, I have spent a lot less money and already have a job. They're all trying to get a job at Sunshine, and most are here on the two week job seeker package that I flunked.

I spent my Beer Bucks voucher (free booze voucher that came with the package).

Getting up at 5:20 seemed almost natural today, and with my stuff in a locker in the Hostel I just had to take myself down to work same as yesterday (which is here, by the way). This time, though, I had my MP3 player with me, which made the whole rigmarole of washing up so much more pleasant, until it cut about 1 hour 30 before the end of the shift.

Muse, your music is beautiful. Coldplay, you sustained me for over 4 hours. Keane, WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY ZEN!!

But I finished my shift only 5 minutes over today, because I can just clean the sinks when it gets close to 2:30.

Then I went and checked in at the SameSun Backpacker's Hostel, the accommodation provided by my employers by a mere $10 a day. And for that, my room is a four-bed with two other occupants, and complete with an en-suite! But the hot tub is dead, which is a shame.

Next I went shopping at Safeway's- I am now a proud owner of a Safeway loyalty card! I have never appreciated how difficult it is to plan meals, choose the ingredients (how much, what types, how long will this keep for?) and then cook it. But I spent $20 on breakfast and dinner for at least the next 3 days, I had no idea how cheap it is! I had bought all the FRESH ingredients for a tuna pasta bake, which I managed to concoct on my return, which to my surprise turned out perfectly! I now have 3 day's worth of meals, and didn't even use half my ingredients! And you couldn't even taste the burnt onions!

A question for mum, or anyone who gets there first- how long will the following last?

Refrigerated: Large plate of Tuna pasta bake, 1/2 carton cream, 1/2 can sweetcorn
Non-refrigerated: 1 1/2 onions, 8 carrots (one with an end chopped off), 1/2 pack pasta, 1/2 pack of spaghetti (unknown date), 4 taco shells (unknown date).

PS- I found some spaghetti and taco shells in the fridge, so tomorrow I'll buy some mince and bolognaise mix, some cheese and some lettuce and have Tacos for tea. Then use the rest of the bolognaise for another meal some other time.

But now, bed- I have a lie-in and interview tomorrow, and more job hunting. Plus another shop at Safeway's, by the look of things. It took me an hour to buy less than a basket load of stuff, plue significant mental strain. Bring on the burning tomorrow!

  • Well, so you have finally got your life in Canada sorted! Brilliant, unfortunately, I don't have a clue about what the sell-by-dates are for those items. I don't normally cook :D Bad news here i'm afraid, my laptop decided to completely die on me (I suspect a blown CPU). On the worse side, I have to buy a new one (oh no ;) ) AND mum and dad have agreed to pay for half! The ONLY had side of this is that it has vista so i'll have to do some work on it before Whaler allows me to put wireless on it, hopefully Albert will have a copy of XP (I left mine at school). Anyway, enough about me, hope that your having a wonderful time, Catch you later!

  • I am impressed - your culinery skills are something to behold and you will be the most sought after flatmate at Uni! Re;; Your questions: The Tuna (or any cooked meal) will last 24-48 hours but it must be reheated to really piping hot. When storing food, it is always best to cove, so cling film (food grade) or another plate is the cheap option. This also goes for for the cream and sweetcorn, which again will last 2 or 3 days. It is better if the veg is not in a tin so see if you can get some plastic sandwich tubs. The onion is better wrapped in clingfilm/foil and will keep a day but it will stink out the fridge if you put it in unwrapped. Carrots are better chilled and the spag and tacos should really be kept airtight - maybe some poly bags (ziplocks) would be useful.

I hope you are enjoying your big breakfasts and it sounds as if it is still much cheaper to cook your own dinners etc rather than eat discounted hotel food but maybe once a week it would be nice to try the Steaks etc.

Well done with all you have achieved so far, a week is a long time in North America!

Your gliding certificate and silver badge came today - I shall keep them safe unless you need them. Any sign of my letter at the HI yet? I put 'urgent' on it. Maybe speak to you soon. Love from us all, xxx
