My First Semi-Pro Gig

Right. Now I begin the massive blog-update...

After coming back from Lake Louise and heading back up to Sunshine, I was supposed to get practicing for our first gig on Saturday. Unfortunately, I think I had other plans and didn't do much more than a bit of light music reading just before going to sleep... My manager wasn't too impressed.

I'd signed up for an extra day of work on Saturday since I need the money and they need me. So when I'd finished I had an hour or so to perfect my music before changing and heading over to Chimney Corner, the classy bar on the first floor of the Sunshine Inn. It had been designed with a bit of a stage area, which was where we set up. I wish I had some pictures, but other thoughts were on my mind at that point (for example: if we run out of music after half an hour, do we just repeat the good ones 8 times each, or all of them just another 3? Or, if Patrick were to collapse on is piano, would I carry on regardless like a true pro?)

By the time we were supposed to start, I was full of butterflies. But by the time we did start, I was fine. Once I started to play, I didn't worry about anyone else in the room, only about the sounds coming from Patricks's piano and the ones I was supposed to be making from my Sax. And after the first song, a round of applause told us that we'd done OK.

So we continued to play for another 2 hours, mixing light Jazz from composers such as Gershwin and from movies, with Christmas music (which we and the audience got tired of very quickly), and before long it was 10:00 and we were playing 'We Wish You A Merry Christmas'. My lips were bleeding, but we'd done it!

So pack up and go to bed.

  • glad to have you back on the blog and hear about your first gig. Well done to you both (did the duo have a name?)and I hope there will be other lucrative gigs coming your way. The bleeding lips made me cringe a bit, but trust you have soothed them with Blistese and will take preventative measures everyday this winter.

We loved the webcam event yesterday, the grandparents thought it was SOOO high tech and impressive. Hope you have managed to recuperate over these days off.

We are all fine and will be writing 'family' things by email (just so joe public doesn't fall asleep whilst reading your 'comments'). Hope feet are getting back to normal and the skiing is enjoyable.

Take care, love from us all. xxxx
